Memory Prices Remain High Amidst Falling Sales, Industry Faces Headwinds

Despite minor price adjustments, the cost of RAM and storage drives remains stubbornly high. In a telling sign of market distress, sales in China’s electronics hub, Huaqiangbei, reportedly dropped by 20-30% in October. The situation is characterized by a disconnect: high prices exist, but few deals are being struck.

Memory Market: Sticker Shock and Sluggish Demand

While the stock market, particularly in the memory sector, has seen a correction with leading companies’ shares falling from their yearly peaks, this has not immediately translated to lower retail prices. A visit to numerous memory vendors in Shenzhen’s Huaqiangbei electronics market revealed that 16GB DDR5 modules are still priced between 1400-1600 yuan, 32GB modules range from 2000 to over 3000 yuan, and 1TB SSDs are selling for 800 to over 1000 yuan.

Vendors confirmed that prices have seen only marginal decreases from their highest points. For 16GB and 32GB RAM modules, the drop is a mere 20-50 yuan, while 1TB SSDs have seen a reduction of only 20-30 yuan. Overall, the cost of memory components remains elevated.

Sales Struggles and ‘Price Inversions’ Plague the Market

More significant than minor price fluctuations is the noticeable decline in sales volume. Many Huaqiangbei vendors reported a 20-30% dip in sales during October. The market is experiencing such acute challenges that some segments of the supply chain are reporting a ‘price inversion,’ where the selling price falls below the procurement cost.

The root of this predicament lies in the continued rise of factory gate prices for memory components. However, numerous distributors had previously stocked up on large volumes at these higher prices. With consumer spending hampered by elevated costs, a significant portion of potential buyers have adopted a wait-and-see approach, leading to a general slump in demand. To generate much-needed working capital and alleviate inventory pressure, some distributors are compelled to lower their prices.

Accumulating Pressure and Market Uncertainty

Industry experts explain that the slight price reductions are a necessity for distributors holding substantial inventory, who need to offload stock urgently to meet financial obligations. However, given the high cost of their initial purchases, few are willing to drastically cut prices. This creates a paradoxical market situation: prices remain high, deals are scarce, and in some instances, ‘price inversions’ are occurring.

Inventory buildup and financial strain within the supply chain continue to mount, fostering an atmosphere of uncertainty in the memory component market. Consumers hoping for significant price drops will likely need to remain patient, as current market realities dictate a different course.
