Vodafone has provided one million apartments with uninterrupted Internet

Vodafone continues to develop fixed-line communications using modern GPON technology. Today, the company has connected more than 8 thousand apartment buildings in 16 cities of Ukraine to the energy-efficient Internet network.

Over the past three years, Vodafone has invested UAH 670 million in the development of its fixed network. During this time, the company has increased its GPON network coverage 10 times.

New zones

The operator is actively building new zones in Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Lviv, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv and Ivano-Frankivsk. In August this year, the construction of an energy-efficient network started in Poltava, Chernihiv, Zhytomyr, Lutsk, Rivne and Ternopil.

“To provide as many Ukrainians as possible with power outage-resistant Internet access, we are actively building new GPON zones. At the same time, we also make sure that existing subscribers also have stable Internet access during long-term power outages. That is why we are upgrading our FTTB network to GPON and migrating all users to a new modern technology that will allow them to stay connected for more than 72 hours even in the absence of power supply in their homes,” says Vitaliy Myasnikov, CTO of Vega, responsible for fixed-line internet development at Vodafone Ukraine.

In 2024, the company modernized the network in 155 buildings in Kyiv, Lviv and Odesa. Compared to the period before the full-scale invasion, the pace of construction has more than doubled. This year, most new apartment buildings were connected in Kyiv (577), Dnipro (376), and Lviv (299).

Vodafone Гігабіт

5200 km of optics

To provide Internet access via GPON technology to so many apartments, the operator laid 5200 kilometers of optics. This distance is approximately equal to a trip across Europe, from Ukraine to the westernmost coast of Portugal (Kyiv – Lisbon).

Vodafone’s home Internet, which works even when there is no electricity, is already available to more than 1.2 million households. More than 1.1 million of the available connections were built after Vega became part of Vodafone Ukraine, 75% of which were commissioned during the war.

Demand growth

The company has increased the number of GPON customers by 14 times, with more than 100,000 subscribers using this energy-efficient technology.

Vodafone provides GPON technical sites with modern alternative power supply systems, which allows the company to provide Internet services for more than 72 hours without interruption, which is especially important in case of prolonged power outages. Since Vodafone started developing fixed-line communications based on Vega, the demand for GPON services has increased 7 times. The popularity of GPON Internet services is driven by energy efficiency, network reliability and high access speeds of up to 1000 Mbps.
