Among the hostile hacker attacks against Ukraine in the first half of 2024, it is important to note numerous attempts to obtain personal data of Ukrainian military personnel to gain access to military systems.

This is stated in the analytical report “Russian Cyber Operations” H1 ‘2024, prepared by the State Special Communications Service of Ukraine.

The personal data of military personnel, such as their last name and first name, passport details, and most importantly, their place of service and position, allow hackers to focus on attacks on specific systems.

Since most corporate email servers use security features, hackers are increasingly refusing to send malware to victims’ mailboxes and preferring to attack through other means of communication.

This is where messengers, which are also used by a large number of military personnel, come in handy. Having enough information about a person and a contact phone number, hackers from the group pose as others and start communicating with a future victim, usually using Signal. However, any available resources are used to “process” victims, even dating platforms.

Subsequently, having “gained the victim’s trust”, under the guise of award documents, videos of combat operations, recruitment to other units, etc., the victim is sent an archive with a label file.
