Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset released for future flagship killers

Recently, Qualcomm has held a press event where they debuted their new Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 SoC. This new chip is essentially a slightly stripped-down version of the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip.

The new Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 continues to offer hardware ray tracing acceleration, a feature that debuted on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. This feature helps with the complex calculations required for ray tracing, allowing for more realistic lighting, shadows, and reflections in games and other applications. Adreno Frame Motion Engine 2.0, which was also introduced on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, is also on board the new chip. This technology can potentially double the frame rate in games from 60 frames per second to 120 frames per second by generating additional frames between those rendered by the game itself.

On the processor side, it has a Cortex-X4 main core, four Cortex A720 cores, and three Cortex-A520 cores clocked at 3.0 GHz, 2.8 GHz, and 2.0 GHz, respectively. The SoC is compatible with up to 24 GB of LPDDR5x RAM operating at 4200 MHz.

The processor includes an 18-bit triple cognitive ISP function for image and video processing. It offers features such as always-on camera, photo enhancement, semantic segmentation, Snapdragon Low Light Vision (LLV), and 2x sHDR (Super High Dynamic Range). It is capable of recording 4K HDR video at 60 frames per second and 1080p video at up to 240 frames per second.

For connectivity, it will offer a FastConnect 7800 mobile communication system and Wi-Fi 7 with HBS (high-bandwidth spectrum), as well as a Snapdragon X70 5G RF system, 5G AI processor, and the mentioned 5G release 17, which is the latest upgrade to 5G, providing better performance and wider range.

On-device AI generation will also be a key aspect of this chip, offering image generation and support for up to 10 billion parameters, which is, frankly, a bit much for a low-powered device like a smartphone.

Qualcomm has announced that global OEMs and brands including HONOR, iQOO, realme, Redmi, and Xiaomi will be moving to the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 platform. The first device is expected to launch in March.
