The global silicon wafer market is poised for significant growth, with the International Semiconductor Industry Association (SEMI) projecting record-breaking shipment volumes through 2029. Following a substantial increase in 2026, the industry anticipates a sustained upward trend, surpassing previous peaks.

Historic Growth Predicted by 2026

SEMI’s latest forecast indicates an 11.8% rise in global silicon wafer shipments in 2026, a historical high and the second-largest single-year increase. By 2026, total shipments are expected to reach 14.42 billion square inches, equivalent to approximately 127.5 million 12-inch wafers. This surge highlights the increasing demand for essential components powering the semiconductor industry.

Sustained Record-Breaking Performance Through 2029

The growth momentum is projected to continue beyond 2026. SEMI’s outlook suggests that from 2027 to 2029, silicon wafer shipments will consistently set new records, eclipsing the previous peak established in 2022. By the end of 2029, global shipments are forecast to hit 17.034 billion square inches, which translates to roughly 150.61 million 12-inch wafers. This sustained performance underscores the robust and expanding demand for these foundational semiconductor materials.

Key Drivers Fueling Demand

Several factors are contributing to the current and projected demand for silicon wafers, with artificial intelligence (AI) trends playing a significant role:

  • Increased Demand for Epitaxial Wafers: The production of advanced logic chips necessitates substantial quantities of epitaxial wafers, driving demand in this specialized segment.
  • Surge in Polished Wafer Demand: The advanced memory sector is also a key contributor, boosting the need for high-quality polished wafers.
  • Recovery in Fab Utilization: Positive trends are being observed in the utilization of manufacturing capacity for semiconductors produced using mature technologies.

These combined factors are creating a favorable environment for the silicon wafer market, which serves as the bedrock for the entire semiconductor ecosystem.
