In Odesa region, scientists have collected up to 4 kg of fuel oil that washed ashore after the Russian tankers accident. Employees of the Tuzly Estuaries National Park spent three days examining nearly 40 km of sandy shoreline.
“The collected samples were sent to a private professional laboratory in Odesa for research,” says Ivan Rusev, PhD, head of the research department of the Tuzly Estuaries National Park.
According to the scientist, there is currently no fuel oil on the coast of the national park, but there are no guarantees that the sea will not throw it out again tomorrow – millions of small fractions are still drifting in the waters of the northwestern Black Sea.
As a reminder, on December 15, 2024, two Russian tankers, Volgoneft 212 and Volgoneft 239, began to sink near the Kerch Strait. There were 13 crew members on board one vessel and 14 on board the other. Preliminarily, the incident was caused by a storm and damage to the tankers due to bad weather.
