Meta is rolling out the ability for its artificial intelligence chatbotto “remember” certain details about you, such as your dietary preferences or interests, the company announced in a blog post on Monday. It will then use your past conversations, as well as data from your Facebook and Instagram accounts, to provide more relevant recommendations.
Meta first started rolling out the memory feature for its AI in its chatbot last year, but it will now be available on Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp on iOS and Android in the US and Canada. While you can ask Meta AI to remember certain things, such as that you like to travel, it will also “pick up important details based on context.”
For example, if Meta AI offers you a recipe for a dish that contains meat and you reply that you are a vegan, the chatbot will adjust its further answers to take into account your preferences.
In addition to these “memories,” Meta AI on Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram will provide “a higher level of personalization” by using information from your accounts on each platform, including your age, gender, and “interests based on your activity,” as stated on Meta’s support page.
According to Meta, if you ask its chatbot to recommend something fun for the family, Meta AI can use your home location as listed on your Facebook profile, as well as recently watched videos of live country performances, to recommend a local country music concert. When asked if personalization can be turned off, Meta spokesperson Emil Vazquez said that the company “does not currently offer to opt out of these features,” adding that “we believe the best experience is a personalized one.”
Meta says that its AI will only remember things in one-on-one conversations, not in group chats, and that you can delete its memories “at any time.” Chatbots like ChatGPT and Google Gemini already have a similar feature.
