Are you tired of not being able to see the sunset from your high-rise penthouse apartment because of the massive TV screen? If you have $60,000 in your pocket, you can now buy the LG Signature OLED T, a completely wireless, transparent 77-inch OLED TV with a transparent screen. The TV manufacturer showed it off at CES earlier this year, but 12 months later, you can finally buy it if you’re willing to shell out five figures for a single TV.
In addition to being transparent, the Signature OLED T (in case you hadn’t guessed, the “T” stands for “transparent”) is a 4K, 120Hz smart TV with true wireless setup. This TV is best suited for a home with floor-to-ceiling windows, where a TV would interfere with your enjoyment of the luxurious, expensive view. The TV also comes with a black curtain that gives the OLED TV a more traditional look. By lowering the curtain when the TV is off, you can see through it “like through a window”.
There’s only one size, and it’s big – 77 inches. Anyone with $60,000 will need the space to install it. The point is to create the illusion of extra space when you don’t have to stare at a massive TV taking up half the living room wall. On the other hand, you will lose the point if you put it in the corner of the living room, away from annoying light sources that reflect glare on a traditional panel.
The stand is also an integral part of the TV, so if you don’t want to disassemble it, make sure it matches your interior. The $60,000 TV comes with additional side shelves wide enough to hold a plant pot, PlayStation 5, or Xbox upright, but not much else.
At least LG offers a special version of its regular home screen called “T Home”. Viewers can still see through the TV, but the illusion is broken when you open one of your apps to view content. At the bottom of the main menu, an additional “T-panel” appears, showing the time, weather, and a simple news slider. The best part is the “T-Objet” permanent display mode, which is best suited for showing off photos or artwork.
You connect it to a special “Zero Connect Box” that streams everything to your TV. This is important because there is no room on your TV to connect HDMI or your smart TV dongles. The set-top box should be able to project a signal within 30 feet. You can keep the set-top box next to your TV or tuck it into a nearby cabinet so that nothing interferes with the signal.
LG’s Signature T transparent TV supports Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, as well as the usual suspects HDR10 and HLG. The panel still uses LG’s a11 AI Processor 4K, which comes with artificial intelligence scaling technology developed by the company. It also has LG’s gaming pad and G-Sync feature, which is compatible with VRR for various consoles.
Even though the Signature T is see-through, it has regular TV speakers. We at Gizmodo didn’t spend too much time with it, but we found that the woofers sounded great, albeit with typical TV quality.
You probably know that the Signature T is an ultra-expensive luxury brand TV that’s not meant for ordinary people. However, the special UI version suggests that LG may want to expand the number of transparent offerings in the future, perhaps at a lower price point. LG’s OLED displays have already become some of our favorite TVs this year, although we liked the company’s QNED displays a little less.
