Apple plans smart glasses with and without AR

Apple has “made progress” in developing a chip for potential smart glasses that could compete with Ray-Ban’s Meta smart glasses, Bloomberg reports.

The chip is apparently based on the chips Apple uses for the Apple Watch, although the company has removed some parts and is designing it so that it can work with “multiple cameras” that could be in smart glasses, Bloomberg reports. Apple wants mass production of the chip to begin by the end of 2026 or sometime in 2027, so the glasses themselves could appear within that timeframe.

Apple is also reportedly working on glasses that use augmented reality, which is similar to what Meta is working on. Meta demonstrated its Orion glasses last year, but they will not be sold to the general public; instead, the company expects the second generation of these glasses to be sold to consumers, and Bloomberg claims that they could be available in 2027.

Apple is also developing chips for the camera-equipped Apple Watch and Airpods, and the goal is to have these chips ready “by about 2027,” Bloomberg reports. The company is also developing new M-series chips and specialized chips for artificial intelligence servers, the report said.
