YouTube says it has expanded AI-powered autodubbing to “hundreds of thousands of channels” in the YouTube Partner Program that “focus on knowledge and information.” YouTube says it will soon add the feature to “other types of content.”
What the dubs consist of depends on the language used in the original video. If the original video was in English, it will be translated into French, German, Hindi, Italian, Spanish, Indonesian, Japanese, and Portuguese. If the original video was created in one of these languages, YouTube will only create an English dub.
For channels that have this feature, AI videos are created automatically when the original video is uploaded, but creators can choose to preview them before publishing. YouTube also provides an option to not publish or remove dubs, as stated in the support document for this feature.
Currently, the dubs don’t sound very natural, but YouTube promises that with further updates, they will better mimic “tone, emotion, and even the ambience of the environment.”
However, YouTube warns that “this technology is still fairly new, and it won’t always be perfect.” The company claims that it “works hard to make it as accurate as possible, but there may be times when the translation is not quite right, or when the dubbed voice does not exactly reproduce the voice of the original speaker.”
