Windows 11 Smart App Control Now Easier to Enable

Microsoft has eased a significant hurdle for Windows 11 users looking to leverage the security and performance benefits of its Smart App Control (SAC) feature. Previously, enabling SAC required a clean installation of Windows 11, a daunting prospect for many. However, this restriction has now been lifted, making the advanced security feature more accessible.

What is Smart App Control?

Introduced with Windows 11 version 22H2, Smart App Control is a dedicated security layer designed to enhance the protection of Windows 11 devices. It operates by utilizing Microsoft’s cloud-based intelligence and code-signing information to determine whether an application is trustworthy and should be allowed to run. Malicious or untrusted software is blocked before it can even attempt to execute.

A key advantage highlighted by Microsoft is SAC’s minimal impact on system performance. Unlike traditional antivirus software that continuously scans active files, SAC intercepts threats before they launch. This proactive approach reduces the system’s workload, making it particularly beneficial for entry-level or systems with less powerful CPUs. The feature aims to offer robust security without compromising user experience or system responsiveness.

The Removal of the Clean Install Requirement

For a considerable period, the mandatory clean installation requirement for SAC was a major deterrent. Users with an existing Windows 11 setup could not simply turn on the feature; they would have to wipe their system and start anew. This policy significantly limited the adoption of what is otherwise a compelling security enhancement.

The change in Microsoft’s approach began earlier this year, with the company rolling out updates that allowed users to enable or disable Smart App Control on existing installations. This shift was first noted in Microsoft’s documentation in January 2024 and has since been more broadly deployed through Windows 11 updates. Users can now find the toggle for SAC within the Windows Security settings, specifically under ‘App and browser control’ > ‘Smart App Control settings’.

While Microsoft had briefly retracted this change, it has now been firmly reinstated. The removal of the clean install prerequisite effectively eliminates the most significant barrier for users wanting to test or implement Smart App Control on supported systems, which include any computer running Windows 11 version 22H2 or later.

Still Some Steps Required

Despite the removal of the clean install mandate, enabling Smart App Control on an existing system still requires a few steps. Users will need to reset their PC or perform a reinstallation of Windows. Crucially, the option ‘Send optional diagnostic data’ must be enabled during the installation process for SAC to be activated.

This adjustment by Microsoft is a welcome move for security-conscious users and those seeking to optimize their system’s performance. By lowering the barrier to entry, Microsoft is encouraging wider adoption of its integrated security solutions, making Windows 11 a safer and potentially faster operating system for a broader audience.
