Navigation app Waze is discontinuing support for Google Assistant for iPhone, citing “ongoing difficulties” with the service’s integration. The company says it plans to replace it with an “improved voice integration solution” in the future. Google Assistant will still work for Android users.
This comes a full year after iPhone users began reporting issues with Google Assistant, with many noting that voice commands were completely broken. Waze says that it has “not been working as intended for over a year” and that it would prefer to “phase out Google Assistant on iOS” rather than “fix a feature that has faced ongoing difficulties.”
As previously reported, Google Assistant for Waze will continue to work on Android phones. However, the question arises as to how long Android users will be able to give voice commands in the application using the digital assistant. Google has promised to switch users from Google Assistant to Gemini.
In fact, the company stated that “the classic Google Assistant will no longer be available on most mobile devices” by the end of the year. It will also no longer be available for download in app stores starting later this year. Waze has already started testing Gemini as part of a platform that allows users to use natural language to report traffic incidents.
