GeoGuessr, a geography game in which players need to guess a location based on a random image from Google Street View, is coming to Steam. The game is scheduled to go into early access on the platform sometime in April. We hope that this will greatly simplify access to the game on Steam Deck without the need to interfere with browser settings in desktop mode.
The developers are using the Steam Early Access approach to “refine gameplay, introduce new features, and deliver the best possible experience with direct player feedback” in order to create “the best competitive and casual geography game ever.” The early access version on Steam will have at least a competitive single player mode and casual team duels, although more modes and competitive features are planned to be added in the coming months.
GeoGuessr has a fairly thriving competitive scene – this year’s world championship has a $100,000 prize pool – so you can win money if you become a great player in the game. But beware: if you think professional GeoGuessr is your calling, you’ll be up against some incredibly skilled players. They can identify parts of the world by the corn growing on the side of the road, the clouds in the sky, and the decor of a room. The advantages of GeoGuessr are absolutely absurd.
It is currently unclear how much the full version of Steam will cost. The free version will include unlimited access to the amateur division, which is the lowest rank of GeoGuessr, as well as unrated team duels. To access the full Solo Duels mode, you will need a Steam Pass, which can be purchased inside the game.
The store page states that the price will not change while the game is in early access (it is expected to last at least six months). The developers also do not plan to raise the price when the game leaves early access.
The original, 12-year-old web version allows players to make three free daily guesses, but to play more, you need to pay for a subscription that starts at $2.50 per month. Unlimited access to the mobile apps is available with the Pro Unlimited plan, which costs $3 per month. While there will be cross-play between Steam and the browser/mobile versions, GeoGuessr’s current plans do not include full access to the Steam version.
