Volkswagen has announced a massive global recall affecting approximately 2.86 million vehicles due to a potential issue with the steering system. The German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) confirmed the recall on September 25th, with Volkswagen stating the measure is precautionary.
Steering System Vulnerability Identified
The core of the problem lies in the steering system’s fixing bolts. According to the KBA, these bolts may corrode over time, leading to potential fracture. In extreme scenarios, this could result in a complete loss of steering control.
Extensive Global Reach
The recall spans a significant number of vehicles worldwide. Of the total 2.86 million cars, approximately 960,000 are within Germany. Volkswagen emphasized that the issue was discovered during internal quality checks, and importantly, there have been no reported injuries or accidents linked to this specific defect.
Affected Models and Production Dates
The majority of the affected vehicles belong to the Volkswagen brand, with 2.16 million units being recalled. These models were produced between September 24, 2013, and July 1, 2024, and include popular models such as the Golf, Tiguan, and Touran.
Audi vehicles are also impacted by this recall. Nearly 700,000 Q3 models manufactured between October 31, 2017, and May 23, 2024, are included in the recall scope.
