Volkswagen is working on an entry-level electric car that will be sold at a base price of 20,000 euros ($21,000). The company has already given its employees a sneak peek at the initial design during a meeting in Wolfsburg, Germany, where it announced the new model. Volkswagen plans to unveil the model to the public in early March, although its production version will not be ready until 2027.
The automaker has not yet disclosed details or specifications of the upcoming model, but it will be part of the upcoming small electric vehicle lineup that includes the ID.2all. Volkswagen, which first unveiled the ID.2all concept in 2023, said that its production version will be available to dealers in 2026. While the €20,000 model is set to become Volkswagen’s most affordable electric vehicle, the ID.2all will be the brand’s first small all-electric car. When it goes on sale, its base price will be 25,000 euros. However, it is not entirely clear whether this entry-level model will be produced globally, as Volkswagen’s Thomas Schaefer called it “an affordable, high-quality and profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe.”
Since the launch of the ID family in 2019, Volkswagen has sold more than 1.35 million ID vehicles worldwide. This number includes 500,000 ID.3s sold last year. One of the company’s latest innovations is the long-awaited ID.Buzz, an electric van with retro aesthetics, with a starting price of $59,995 in the United States.
