The United States government has officially launched a large-scale investigation into radio frequency spectrum to lay the groundwork for future 6G networks. The initiative is led by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA).
US NTIA launches massive spectrum study to enable 6G
The study will evaluate the feasibility of opening several bands for licensed mobile use, ensuring no adverse impact on existing systems.
Four frequency bands under review
According to the NTIA, the investigation will cover four key frequency ranges:
- 1.6 GHz
- 2.7 GHz
- 4.4 GHz
- 7 GHz
The agency describes this as the largest spectrum review program in U.S. history, aiming to secure additional resources for upcoming mobile networks while preserving the nation’s competitiveness in telecommunications.
Preparing for the 6G era
In 2025, the U.S. Congress directed the NTIA to identify at least 500 MHz of radio spectrum that could be allocated for commercial use over the next five years. Separately, the government has set a deadline to complete the study of the 7.125–7.4 GHz band within the next 12 months.
Before practical implementation begins, the NTIA’s proposals must undergo a 60‑day review by relevant congressional committees.

Radio frequency spectrum remains one of the most valuable assets for mobile communications development. With the arrival of 6G, demand for additional frequencies is expected to surge, enabling higher data speeds, lower latency, and support for new services—ranging from widespread artificial intelligence applications to autonomous transport and industrial Internet of Things.
