Motorola has announced the first phone in its Edge 60 series, which comes with a new design: a faux canvas finish. The Edge 60 Fusion looks different, with its molded camera module and surprisingly slim body, but the basic specs match the low price tag of just £299.99 (about $390) in the UK.
The canvas-effect finish may be one of the phone’s main draws, but it’s only available in the Amazonite version. It also comes in blue and pink colors, but they have a faux leather finish. Each version has IP68 and 69 ratings, which means the phone is fully protected from dust, water immersion, and high-pressure sprays.
Specifications for the Edge 60 Fusion vary slightly from country to country, but the UK launch model is thin for its size, measuring less than 8mm thick, despite the fact that it has a fairly large 5,200mAh battery behind the 6.67-inch OLED screen. Models in other countries have an even larger 5,500 mAh battery, but are slightly thicker.
The Fusion comes with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, but is likely held back by the relatively basic MediaTek Dimensity chipset – 7300 or 7400, depending on the market, but there’s not much difference between the two. The number of cameras is also limited – it may look like there are four on the back, but one of them is a flash and the other is a flicker sensor, so in reality you only get a 50-megapixel main lens and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens.
The Fusion is expected to be the first in a series of Edge 60 phones – there were five models in last year’s Edge 50 lineup. None of them have been launched in the U.S., and most likely won’t be this year either, so U.S. buyers will have to make do with January’s $299.99 Moto G Power, which lacks the Fusion’s OLED display and canvas feel but does have wireless charging. Motorola is expected to announce updated Razr folding phones soon, which are rumored to have a wood finish reminiscent of the 2014 Moto X with a wooden body.
