Roblox players will be paid for watching ads

Roblox is launching a new type of advertising that will reward players with things like in-game currency and bonuses, the company says.

The full-screen video ads, called “Rewarded Video Ads,” can run up to 30 seconds. The ads will be available for programmatic purchase “through Google’s advertising solutions and direct in-app purchases (Direct IO) in the coming weeks,” according to Roblox.

Experience owners in Roblox must be at least 18 years old to show ads, and only publicly available experiences are eligible, according to a page on the hub for creators. Roblox says it only shows ads to players who are 13 years old or older.

The new ads are part of Google’s expansion of its “Immersive Ads” format. In a separate announcement, Google says that they can appear as “a billboard ad you see as you drive through a virtual city, or as a big-screen ad during a virtual soccer match.” The company claims that these ads “naturally fit into the game environment.”

Roblox says it will start selling other ad formats through Google’s platform in the coming months, including billboards and whole lines on the Roblox homepage.
