South Korea’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, Lee Hyoung-il, has projected an optimistic outlook for the semiconductor industry, stating that the current boom is expected to persist until at least 2027. This forecast comes despite recent market volatility.

Stable Growth Amidst Market Fluctuations

According to Lee Hyoung-il, the significant gap between the demand for and supply of semiconductors, coupled with ongoing expansion of production capacity, will ensure sustained industry growth for at least another year. He noted that these factors are key drivers for the sector’s resilience.

These statements were made in the wake of a notable dip in semiconductor company stocks last week. Investor concerns were fueled by potential interest rate hikes by the U.S. Federal Reserve and intensifying industry competition. This led to a sharp sell-off in the shares of South Korean chip giants such as Samsung, SK Hynix, and Seoul Semiconductor.

Lee Hyoung-il acknowledged that chip company stocks have indeed amplified fluctuations in the South Korean stock market this year. He attributed this to the semiconductor industry’s greater weight in the national economy compared to other nations. However, he emphasized that despite the increased volatility in the capital markets, South Korea’s overall economic fundamentals remain “solid.”

Positive Impact on Tax Revenues

Beyond contributing to stock market volatility, the semiconductor sector has also significantly boosted South Korea’s tax revenues. Lee Hyoung-il reported that the country’s tax intake for the current year is anticipated to exceed previous forecasts.

This positive trend in the semiconductor industry underscores its strategic importance to South Korea’s economy. While short-term market corrections may occur, the long-term prospects appear favorable, offering grounds for optimism among government officials and market participants alike.
