Samsung‘s latest smart fridges now support voice recognition with the Bixby assistant, which can be used to display personalized information on the built-in smart displays depending on which language a household member speaks.
Voice identification in smart home technology is nothing new, but in the absence of its own successful line of Samsung-branded smart speakers, connected appliances are the only realistic way for Samsung to apply this kind of personalization.
The main advantage is that the fridge will be able to display your calendar or personal photo gallery using only voice commands. You will also be able to ask the fridge to set an alarm on your phone, which will come in handy if you can’t find it. The update may be more useful for the visually impaired as it will automatically change the display mode of the fridge screen according to the settings, such as color inversion or grayscale, that have been applied on your phone.
Samsung is also adding a new way to activate Bixby on its refrigerators. In addition to tapping on the Bixby icon or using voice commands, you can now double-tap on the fridge display when it’s off to bring the voice assistant to life, which is no longer the default even on Samsung’s own phones.
The Voice ID feature and double-tap gesture are coming to Samsung Bespoke AI refrigerators with Family Hub (the company’s term for large smart home screens) starting with 2025 models, and will be available later for appliances with smaller AI Home displays.
