The enhancements include textbook-synced essay coaching, in-depth explanations for junior high Chinese and mathematics, and expanded capabilities for solving and explaining high school and university math and science problems. Notably, all these new functions are available free of charge.
Guiding the Learning Process, Not Just Giving Answers
Alibaba emphasizes that Qianwen’s latest iteration focuses on guiding the student’s learning journey rather than simply providing answers. The platform is designed to encourage students to delve deeper into the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of their studies.
Interactive Essay Coaching for Elementary Students
For elementary school students, Qianwen now offers essay coaching that synchronizes with textbook units. Instead of a direct prompt, Qianwen engages students with a series of questions to help them brainstorm and structure their writing. For instance, when tackling an essay topic like “My Favorite Thing” from a fifth-grade textbook, Qianwen might ask guiding questions such as, “What favorite thing do you want to write about?” “Why is it special to you?” and “What memorable event happened between you and this item?” This step-by-step questioning aims to help students uncover the most compelling details and articulate their feelings more vividly.
Tailored Explanations for Junior High Subjects
The updated features also bring “mini-lectures” specifically designed for junior high Chinese and mathematics textbooks, focusing on the principle of “explaining exactly where you’re stuck.” Students can begin learning from a specific chapter or knowledge point. For example, when encountering quadratic equations in the third year of junior high, Qianwen will first guide students through a review of linear equations taught previously, facilitating a better understanding of the new concept by comparison. Throughout these textbook explanations, students can pause at any time to ask clarifying questions about difficult concepts, sentences, or problem-solving steps. Qianwen will then adjust the explanation’s content and pace accordingly.
Advanced Problem-Solving for High School and University
Recognizing the increasing complexity of problems in high school and university mathematics and science, Qianwen has extended its interactive explanation capabilities to these subjects. When students get stuck on a particular step in a derivation or problem-solving process, they can ask specific follow-up questions like, “Why is this transformation done this way?” or “What’s the thought process behind the next step?” This allows them to continue learning from the exact point of confusion.
Fostering Independent Learning and Critical Thinking
Cheng Fei, head of intelligent learning business at Qianwen App, stated that AI learning products should prioritize genuine understanding and the ability to solve similar problems independently, rather than just getting the right answer. “More important than giving the answer is letting students know why and learning how to think,” Cheng explained. Through step-by-step guidance and continuous questioning, Qianwen aims to empower students to gradually develop independent learning and critical thinking skills as they engage with and solve problems.
