New Govee desktop display designed for pixel art

Govee, a company specializing in smart lighting, has launched a new product that creates a new and imaginative product category. The gaming pixel lamp displays still or animated pixel images to an 8-bit soundtrack. It can also show weather updates, sports schedules, and bitcoin prices on its retro display. But it wouldn’t be a CES 2025 novelty without artificial intelligence, so you won’t be surprised to learn that the accompanying app allows you to generate artificial pixel art based on text prompts. During the presentation at CES, we had a chance to take a look at Pixel Light and the Govee x JBL collaboration and can confirm that they are adorable and mesmerizing, respectively.

As the product name suggests, the Gaming Pixel Light is marketed as a (desktop or wall) lighting companion for gamers. But it can also be used by anyone who wants to create an atmosphere or become an interesting conversation piece in their home. The luminaire is available in two sizes – rectangle and square – and both come with over 150 preset scenarios, or you can create your own – manually or using the app’s artificial intelligence. You can also control it with Alexa or Google Assistant.

You can use it to create still or animated pixel drawings, and it supports uploading images and GIFs to give you more options for play. The animations play at 30 frames per second, and you can create or edit your own multi-layered animations in the app. Govee claims that the in-app creation tools are easy to use, but we haven’t tried them yet. We had the opportunity to see the displays in person, and they are quite beautiful, with a retro-tech aesthetic that reminds me of LiteBrite put through a gaming laptop filter. The display model had an image created based on the “cat holding a dog” prompt, and the result was a cute tabby holding a much smaller beagle – prompt fulfilled.

The display has a built-in speaker that can synchronize the backlight to the rhythm of 8-bit soundtracks. And if you are willing to shell out an additional $240 for Govee’s HDMI synchronizer, the company claims that Gaming Pixel Light will synchronize with real-time gaming content.

Gaming Pixel Light will be available in Q2 2025. Although Govee’s press materials do not mention the price, the company’s website at CES 2025 lists it as coming soon for $100.

CES will also feature a crossover created in collaboration with JBL: (deep breath) “Table Lamp 2 Pro x Sound by JBL”. This speaker synchronizes its curved lighting surface with music, a feature we’ve seen in many other products. It has 16 music modes, ranging from bright lighting for a party to “soothing effects for relaxation.” The speaker and light hybrid has 240 independently controlled LED beads and over 100 preset scenes. Like the Pixel Light, it allows you to make it your own if you like.

Even on the crowded CES show floor, the sounds from the speaker could still be heard through the noise. Of course, we can’t say what the sound quality was like, but the fact that the speaker is equipped with JBL components is a pretty good bet that the sound will be decent. What was easy to notice in person was the trippy lighting effects that washed over the sleek cylinder, pulsing in time to the music in a hypnotic way.

The Govee Table Lamp 2 Pro x Sound by JBL is expected to go on sale at the end of the second quarter of 2025. There is no information on the price of this model yet.
