At the invitation of Kaan Terzioglu, CEO of VEON Group, Oleksandr Komarov, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Kyivstar, and Oleksandr Komarov, President of Kyivstar, former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived in Kyiv to meet with the national telecom operator’s staff.
At the end of 2023, Mike Pompeo joined the Supervisory Board of Kyivstar, VEON’s Ukrainian subsidiary, as a partner of Impact Investments, a US-based strategic and financial advisory and investment firm that seeks to develop long-term partnerships with leading global companies across industries and regions.
On February 1, 2024, former US Secretary of State Pompeo personally met with Kyivstar’s team to express his support for the company and its team in this difficult time for Ukraine. Secretary Pompeo emphasized that he believes in Ukraine’s victory and the U.S. support for it, regardless of the name of the next President of the United States. He also emphasized that he was impressed by the resilience of Kyivstar’s team, which overcame the consequences of the unprecedented hacker attack and restored critical services to Ukraine as soon as possible.
“Kyivstar’s ability to support communications systems strengthens Ukraine, allows Ukraine to fight this conflict that is so important to my country and incredibly important to me as someone who also cares about America’s security,” said Mike Pompeo, answering a question about the purpose of his joining the company’s Supervisory Board. “Ukraine must win, and Kyivstar is an integral part of ensuring that victory.
Kaan Terzioglu, CEO of VEON Group and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Kyivstar, added that the main goal of VEON and Kyivstar is to unswervingly support Ukraine and its people on their path to prosperity and victory.
“We demonstrate this support every day. This is what Kyivstar’s work is all about. I am very proud of the company’s achievements over the past year. Kyivstar is extremely important for VEON, it is the most valuable treasure in our portfolio, and we will fight for your success just as you fight for the victory of your country. I am very pleased to see the support of VEON’s international investors. This is evidenced by our $600 million investment plans in Ukraine,” he said.
Kyivstar President Oleksandr Komarov thanked the distinguished guests and employees, emphasizing the critical importance of the company for the stability of Ukraine, its economy and defense.
“Kyivstar’s mission is adapted to the realities of war. Our primary task is to provide critical services to all Ukrainians, including the military. We are moving, we are developing, despite the obstacles. The fact that Mr. Mike Pompeo, former US Secretary of State, has joined the Supervisory Board of Kyivstar is proof that we are on the right track. I thank the entire Kyivstar team for their resilience and ability to meet any challenges with dignity,” said Komarov.
