Microsoft is testing a new in-game browser

Microsoft has announced that Microsoft Edge Game Assist, a new gaming add-on for the Edge browser, is now available for beta testing in Windows 11. This “game” add-on is located in the Microsoft Game Bar and is designed to automatically search for and show links to hints and instructions for the game you’re playing using the Edge browser.

Game Assist uses the profile you’re signed in to in Edge, so it will give you access to your data like cookies, autocomplete, and favorites, so “you don’t have to sign in to sites again.” Like other Game Bar widgets, you can pin it above the game while you play. Game Assist is currently available in English, and to use it, you need to enable previews and set Microsoft Edge Beta 132 as your default browser.

For now, you’ll have to search for content for most games on your own, but the game-aware part of Game Assist will automatically show information for a few games, including Baldur’s Gate 3, Diablo IV, and Hellblade II: Senua’s Saga. Microsoft says it will add support for other games “during the preview and over time.”

Game Assist currently only supports mouse and keyboard input, but Microsoft says it will add support for laptops and gamepads in the future. Compact mode support is also coming later, the company says.
