Microsoft will soon no longer allow you to use the Authenticator app to store or automatically fill in passwords. Starting in July, you won’t be able to automatically fill in saved passwords with Authenticator, and you’ll need to use Microsoft Edge or another password management solution.
Microsoft also plans to delete your stored payment information in Authenticator in July of this year, and will delete passwords in August. Last month, Microsoft Authenticator stopped accepting new passwords as part of plans to consolidate the automatic password filling feature in Edge.
Microsoft automatically synchronizes saved passwords with your account so you can access them in Edge. You can set Edge as your default autofill provider by finding the option in your device’s settings and selecting Edge instead of Authenticator. If you don’t want to use Edge, don’t forget to export your passwords to another service before August.
Microsoft Authenticator was launched as a multi-factor authentication solution in 2016, and in 2020 it added support for password storage. While Microsoft Authenticator is discontinuing support for passwords, it will continue to support keys, a solution that lets you use your device’s authentication method to sign in to accounts, such as a PIN, fingerprint, or face scan.
