Kickstarter will notify beneficiaries of project failure

Kickstarter will start notifying backers when a fundraising campaign encounters “significant performance failures” and violates the platform’s rules. The notification will also inform backers of how the platform is addressing the issue, including by “restricting the creator from launching future projects.”

The update is part of a series of changes that Kickstarter plans to implement this year to “improve the backer experience and build trust in our community.” Kickstarter has long faced problems with fraud and projects being shut down after they have raised thousands (and sometimes millions) of dollars, but these changes should at least provide more transparency for backers.

In addition, Kickstarter will show more information about the creators on their project pages, such as their track record, collaborators, and past projects. The platform is also improving its project monitoring tools, which can “help identify and address potential risks earlier in the project life cycle,” the platform said in a statement.
