Thomson Reuters wins early trial over AI

On Tuesday, Delaware District Court Judge Stefanos Bibas issued a partial ruling in favor of Thomson Reuters in a copyright infringement lawsuit against Ross Intelligence, a legitimate artificial intelligence startup. The lawsuit, filed in 2020, is one of the first cases to address the legality of AI tools and how they are trained, often using copyrighted data pulled from somewhere without a license or permission.

Similar lawsuits against OpenAI, Microsoft, and other AI giants are currently making their way through the courts, and they may come down to similar questions about whether AI tools can claim “fair use” protection when using copyrighted material.
