Google stops development of Pixel Tablet 3 tablet

Although the Google Pixel Tablet 2 hasn’t even been released yet, reports have surfaced that Google may be delaying plans for its successor, the Pixel Tablet 3. This news comes just a year after Google re-entered the tablet market with the Pixel Tablet in the summer of 2023.

Google re-entered the tablet market in 2023 with the Pixel Tablet, and it is rumored that it will release its successor sometime in 2025. The Pixel Tablet 2 is expected to feature an official keyboard case and improved cameras, although specific details remain unclear.

Now, a report from Android Headlines, citing unnamed sources, claims that Google has canceled the Pixel Tablet 3, codenamed “Kiyomi.”

Is the Pixel Tablet 2 the last in line?

Sources claim that Google informed internal teams about this decision last week. Employees previously involved in the development of the Pixel Tablet 3 will be transferred to other projects. If confirmed, the move signals Google’s potential move away from long-term tablet development.

Does this mean that the Pixel Tablet 2 will be the final product in the line? For now, it seems so. The report doesn’t explain why Google might move away from producing Android tablets.

However, this would not be Google’s first foray into and exit from the tablet market. Previously, the company discontinued the Nexus line of tablets, and the Pixel Tablet appeared five years after the Pixel Slate.

Even after more than a decade of trying, Google still doesn’t seem to be fully committed to the tablet market, even with its latest products. While this may be good news for Apple and iPad enthusiasts, it’s a setback for those who value the openness of the Android ecosystem.

Fortunately, other Android manufacturers have not been discouraged by Google’s inconsistent tablet strategy. Brands like Samsung, OnePlus, and Xiaomi continue to release new tablets every year and show no signs of slowing down.
