Spotify is getting support for Google’s Gemini extension, which will allow users to search for and play music with an artificial intelligence generative assistant using natural language queries. The extension was first spotted in Google’s app code in June and is now rolling out to compatible Android devices, 9to5Google reports.
Gemini can play music found by song titles, artist names, album titles, playlist titles, or activity, but it can’t currently create playlists or radio stations on Spotify. One thing to keep in mind is that if you have already connected another music service, such as YouTube Music, you will need to verbally indicate (or type) which service you want Gemini to use as part of your initial request, and from that point on, it will default to the one that was last used.
Spotify is the second non-Google app to receive Gemini capabilities, following the rollout of WhatsApp support that began in October.
Google’s support page for the extension explains that to use it in Gemini Apps, you first need to link your Spotify and Google accounts, and enable the Gemini Apps Activity feature, which can store artificial intelligence queries for up to 72 hours. You can’t use the Spotify extension in Google Messages, the Gemini web app, or the Gemini app on iOS, and it only works when you have English as the language for launching Gemini.
