Global personal computer shipments have experienced a significant downturn, hitting their lowest point since the first quarter of 2023. According to preliminary data released by Gartner, worldwide PC shipments for the third quarter of 2026 (26Q3) fell to just 55.4 million units, marking a substantial year-over-year decline of 22.4%.
Factors Driving the Decline
Namrata Banerjee, a principal research analyst at Gartner, attributed this sharp decrease to several converging factors. Notably, the rising costs of storage semiconductors have now fully impacted PC pricing, making devices more expensive for consumers. This cost inflation, coupled with a market trend towards premium, high-end devices, has made the cost of upgrading a PC increasingly prohibitive for many users.
Market Performance by Vendor
Despite the overall market contraction, some vendors managed to perform better than the industry average. Lenovo maintained its position as the market leader, though its shipments also saw a decline. Apple, ASUS, and Acer demonstrated resilience, with their shipment numbers dropping less severely than the overall market.
Conversely, HP and Dell experienced more pronounced decreases in their shipments. The data highlights a challenging quarter for major players, reflecting broader economic pressures and shifting consumer priorities.
Key Shipment Data for 26Q3 vs. 25Q3 (in thousands of units):
- Lenovo: 14,993 (27.1% market share) in 26Q3, down 22.4% from 19,330 (27.1% market share) in 25Q3.
- HP: 10,366 (18.7% market share) in 26Q3, down 30.9% from 15,005 (21.0% market share) in 25Q3.

- Others: 8,030 (14.5% market share) in 26Q3, down 25.6% from 9,037 (15.1% market share) in 25Q3.
The total PC shipments for 26Q3 reached 55,351,000 units, a 22.4% decrease compared to 71,301,000 units in 25Q3.
Outlook and Consumer Behavior
The findings from Gartner suggest a significant shift in consumer purchasing habits for personal computers. The increased cost of components is directly influencing the average selling price (ASP) of PCs, making it harder for consumers to justify the expense of a new device. As the market continues its trend toward more premium offerings, the gap between affordable and high-end options widens, potentially slowing down upgrade cycles.
This trend indicates that consumers are likely holding onto their existing devices for longer periods or are becoming more selective about their purchases. The combination of economic factors and the push towards higher-priced devices is creating a challenging environment for PC manufacturers.
