Chrome will use Gemini Nano for scam detection

Google has just announced an update to the Enhanced Security feature in the Chrome browser. On the desktop, the browser now uses Gemini Nano to protect users from fraud through remote technical support. According to Google, the large language model on the device allows Chrome to protect people from fraud that the company has not previously encountered.

“[Gemini Nano] is ideal for this use case because of its ability to recognize the diverse, complex nature of websites, helping us adapt more quickly to new fraud tactics,” Google says, adding that it hopes to bring the feature to Android devices soon. In the future, the company plans to use the same approach with artificial intelligence to combat a wider variety of frauds.

In the meantime, Android users can look forward to enhanced protection against fraudsters who use Chrome notifications as an attack vector. Google is once again turning to machine learning to offer this feature. “When Chrome’s machine learning model on your device flags a notification, you’ll receive an alert with the option to unsubscribe or view the blocked content,” Google explains. “And if you decide that the warning was shown incorrectly, you can allow future notifications from that website.”

Fighting fraud was in the center of Google’s attention last year. In May, for example, the company introduced a real-time fraud alert system for phone calls. More recently, the company introduced a set of security features for messages. As a result of its efforts, Google claims to prevent hundreds of millions of fraudulent results from reaching users.
