China’s vehicle import figures for July 2026 reveal a notable downturn, with 43,000 units imported, marking a 13% decrease compared to the same period last year. This trend aligns with a broader decline in the first seven months of 2026, which saw a 11% drop in imported vehicles, totaling 240,000 units.

Key Trends and Market Performance

According to Cui Dongshu, Secretary-General of the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), the decline is particularly pronounced in high-value segments, such as imported four-wheel-drive SUVs. Despite a challenging year-on-year comparison due to a low base in early 2025, the retail sales of imported cars for January-July 2026 saw a 31% decrease, reaching 220,000 units. The performance in July was particularly weak, with retail sales dropping by 40% to 27,000 units, indicating significant ongoing pressure on the imported vehicle market.

Top Importing Countries

In July 2026, the leading countries exporting vehicles to China were:

  • Japan: 23,587 units
  • Germany: 7,479 units
  • United States: 4,855 units
  • United Kingdom: 3,094 units
  • Slovakia: 1,839 units

Looking at the cumulative figures for January-July 2026, the top five exporting countries remain consistent, with Japan leading by a significant margin:

  • Japan: 127,080 units
  • Germany: 51,790 units
  • United States: 22,587 units
  • Slovakia: 15,359 units
  • United Kingdom: 13,949 units

Luxury Segment Performance

Cui Dongshu also highlighted a divergence within the luxury imported car market. While the overall trend for imported vehicles has been downward in recent years, the luxury segment is experiencing mixed fortunes. Lexus has maintained a relatively stable sales performance, securing its position as the leading imported luxury brand. However, some ultra-luxury brands have shown abnormal volatility, with signs of significant downturns, contributing to the substantial pressure faced by the industry.

The data suggests a complex market dynamic, where established players navigate declining overall import volumes while facing challenges from shifting consumer preferences and economic conditions. The significant drop in retail sales, especially in July, signals a need for strategic adjustments within the imported automotive sector in China.
