AI powerhouse Anthropic is reportedly in early-stage negotiations to lease a massive 1 Gigawatt (GW) of computing capacity from a data center developer backed by Apollo Global Management. This ambitious move, if finalized, would represent a significant step in securing the infrastructure needed for its cutting-edge AI models.

Massive Infrastructure Deal in the Works

According to sources cited by The Information, Anthropic aims to act as a direct tenant within facilities developed by Stream Data Centers, a company with a 27-year history and a nationwide presence. The plan involves deploying custom AI chips designed jointly by Broadcom and Google, known as TPUs (Tensor Processing Units), within these data centers. This strategic decision highlights Anthropic’s deep collaboration with Google, as the tech giant may also provide credit guarantees for the project. This isn’t the first time Anthropic has sought Google’s backing for similar ventures; the AI firm has previously explored Google’s commitment for other data center leases.

Nvidia’s Growing Influence

While TPUs are a primary focus, the agreement reportedly allows for the deployment of other types of AI accelerators, such as Nvidia’s GPUs. This flexibility comes at a time when Nvidia is actively investing heavily in projects and data center enterprises to ensure its own chips remain at the forefront of AI infrastructure. The competition to power the next generation of artificial intelligence is clearly heating up, with chip manufacturers vying for dominance.

Significant Capital Investment Required

The sheer scale of the proposed deal is underscored by the estimated capital expenditure required. Data center developers indicate that building 1 GW of compute capacity necessitates an investment of at least $40 billion. This substantial figure illustrates the immense resources needed to support the rapidly growing demands of advanced AI development and deployment.

Anthropic’s Evolving Compute Strategy

Currently, Anthropic’s compute needs are largely met through leases with major cloud providers, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, and SpaceX. However, the company is diversifying its approach. Beyond traditional data center infrastructure leases, Anthropic is also directly leasing AI chips from manufacturers. Earlier this year, the company announced a significant partnership with AMD, securing a 2 GW supply of chips. Furthermore, Anthropic entered into a $35 billion agreement to lease TPUs via a special purpose entity established by Apollo and Blackstone.

This latest negotiation for a 1 GW lease, potentially involving dedicated data centers and custom hardware, signifies Anthropic’s aggressive strategy to secure the foundational compute power required to maintain its position as a leader in the AI landscape. The deal, if it materializes, will not only reshape Anthropic’s infrastructure but also have broader implications for the data center and AI chip markets.
