After creating an empire in the e-commerce sector, tech giant Amazon is planning to make a mark in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry. According to Reuters, Amazon will develop a new generative AI model designed to process video and images in addition to text. The new AI model, called Olympus, aims to reduce dependence on Anthropic’s Claude chatbot. Here is a detailed overview of the upcoming AI model.
Amazon introduces “Olympus”
Olympus will be able to understand scenes in both images and videos, allowing users to search for specific scenes, such as “how to cook a dish.” Additionally, users will be able to use simple text prompts to search for anything. AI can easily decode text, images, and videos.
Last week, Amazon invested an additional $4 billion in Anthropic, a competitor of OpenAI. This follows a similar $4 billion investment in September 2023 to capitalize on generative AI technology. Amazon may officially announce the launch of Olympus at the annual AWS re:Invent customer conference next week.
Although Amazon already has a Claude AI chatbot, the launch of Olympus will help ease the workload of Claude. It should be noted that Claude AI is a popular chatbot on Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Other Amazon initiatives
Amazon is also expanding its activities in the space and internet sectors. Recently, the company shared details about its upcoming Project Kuiper, an ambitious satellite internet initiative scheduled to launch in 2025. Although the project was first conceived in 2018, in 2020, Amazon received a license from the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to deploy and operate its satellite network.
The Kuiper project aims to provide cost-effective high-speed internet to rural and remote areas where traditional broadband infrastructure is difficult to build. The initiative could also play a key role in the development of India’s space sector through potential collaboration between Amazon, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), and Indian space startups.
