BMW Group Chairman Oliver Zipse made his first visit to China since assuming the role, emphasizing the country’s significance as a competitive and innovation-driven market. During his visit, he highlighted BMW’s commitment to localization as a key strategic driver for its global growth. The company aims for over 95% of its vehicle sales in China to be produced locally by 2030.

China: A Crucial Market for BMW

Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the BMW Group, recently concluded his inaugural visit to China, a market he described as one of the world’s most challenging and advanced benchmarks. He expressed that competition focused on technological innovation, product quality enhancement, and superior customer value is welcomed by BMW. This competitive landscape, Zipse noted, has been the bedrock of BMW’s success for decades, continually pushing the company toward innovation and technological advancement.

BMW’s strategic direction in China is heavily focused on deepening its localization efforts, which is integral to its global expansion strategy. A significant target has been set for the coming years: by 2030, the company intends for more than 95% of the vehicles it sells in China to be manufactured within the country.

Investment in Electrification and Localization

Following his engagements in Beijing, Zipse traveled to Shenyang, Liaoning province, to attend the 2026 BMW China Innovation Day and the offline ceremony for the sixth-generation power battery on October 15th. Shenyang serves as a critical hub within BMW’s global production network. The sixth-generation power battery project, a substantial investment of 10 billion RMB, marks another significant milestone in BMW’s localization and electrification journey in China.

Product Roadmap for the Chinese Market

BMW has previously outlined its product roadmap specifically for the Chinese market during its 2026 Capital Markets Day. The plans include the launch of several long-wheelbase variants and new models:

  • Q4 2026: Long-wheelbase version of the iX3.
  • Q1 2027: Long-wheelbase version of the i3, new 7 Series and all-electric i7, the new X5, and the all-electric iX5.
  • Q2-Q4 2027: Four additional models, the specifics of which have not yet been disclosed.
  • 2028: Five entirely new models are planned for release.

These developments underscore BMW’s commitment to adapting its offerings to the evolving demands of the Chinese automotive market, particularly in the rapidly growing electric vehicle sector. The emphasis on localized production and the introduction of tailored models reflect a long-term strategy to strengthen its position in one of the world’s most vital automotive arenas.
