The game development studio behind MindsEye, Build a Rocket Boy (BARB), has entered into administration, marking a potential end for the company co-founded by former Grand Theft Auto producer Leslie Benzies and Mark Gerhard. The administration appointment was made on September 25th, according to reports from Insider Gaming.
Administration Process Underway
Information from the UK’s registrar of companies indicates that Build a Rocket Boy has filed the necessary documentation to commence administration proceedings. In this process, the existing management team hands over control to appointed administrators. These administrators will then thoroughly assess the studio’s assets and financial health. Their subsequent decisions could lead to the sale of the company, its liquidation, or outright closure. Official details regarding the administration are expected to be released publicly within the next ten days.
Recent Layoffs Precede Administration News
This development comes just over a week after the studio’s most recent round of layoffs. Several employees had departed the company, with HR employee Dan Hawkins previously stating his commitment to assisting BARB with the final tasks of winding down the human resources department. This announcement had already raised concerns about the studio’s operational stability.
MindsEye Development and Controversies
Build a Rocket Boy’s flagship title, MindsEye, had ambitious plans. Prior to its release, the studio boldly claimed that the game’s blueprint was intended to guide the company for the next decade. However, following its launch in June 2025, the game faced significant criticism, primarily due to numerous bugs and performance issues.
Leslie Benzies had previously alleged that the studio and MindsEye were targets of a “smear campaign” valued at 1 million euros, suggesting an attempt to damage the game’s reputation.
