GTA 6 Trailer Dropped When Game Was Unfinished

It’s been almost three years since the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI graced our screens, and now, a Rockstar North executive has revealed that the game was far from complete at that point.

The long wait for GTA 6 has been amplified by Rockstar’s typically sparse marketing. For a considerable time, the initial trailer was our primary source of information, introducing us to Lucia, later confirmed as Jason, the Vice City setting, and a 2025 release window that now seems ambitious. However, the trailer’s accompanying song, Tom Petty’s ‘Love is a Long Road,’ undeniably set a distinctive tone for the game, resonating with fans and seemingly beyond.

In a recent interview with French publication TroisCouleurs, Rob Nelson, the co-studio head at Rockstar North, shared insights into the studio’s creative process. Nelson explained that the exact vision for a game’s final form isn’t always concrete when development begins. “It might just be a vague idea at first, and more often than not, we’ll center the creative direction around a song,” he stated.

Nelson elaborated on Rockstar’s development approach, emphasizing the importance of experiencing the game’s setting firsthand. “Once we’ve determined the setting for a game, the first thing we do is travel there. We go there to experience it, walk around,” he said. Developers would “take a lot of photos, experience the place as much as possible, see what resonates with us, and then start discussing and sharing the ideas we want to incorporate into the game.”

He continued, “I’d love to say that we visualize scenes from here [in our heads], but you’re often chasing something a bit ephemeral, and then you see something, choose a piece of music, and those two things start to resonate. And the game starts to integrate those elements.”

Nelson then specifically addressed the first GTA 6 trailer. “The first trailer for this game, Tom Petty’s ‘Love is a Long Road,’ was a real mission statement,” he explained. “The game wasn’t completely realized at that point; you only had a rough idea of its future form, but you had to go all out to make it happen. And when this team was able to do that – which undoubtedly required the full commitment of the team and presented the best they could deliver at that time – the final product, in a fitting way, became a beacon guiding the core texture of the game.”

Looking back, it’s clear that GTA 6 was not fully formed at the time of the trailer’s release, with players still facing a nearly three-year wait until they can get their hands on it. Nevertheless, what was presented in that trailer was already exceptionally compelling.
