China’s internet and related services sector experienced steady revenue growth in the first seven months of 2026, with overall business income rising by 7.3 percent compared to the same period last year. This is according to a new report released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

Overall Performance

During the January-July period of 2026, major internet companies in China collectively saw their internet business revenue increase by 7.3%. This indicates a robust and continuing expansion for the digital economy.

Information Services Lead Growth

Breaking down the revenue streams, the information services sector, which includes areas like online content, software development, and internet publishing, demonstrated particularly strong performance. Companies in this segment reported an 8.2% year-on-year increase in internet business revenue.

The life services sector, encompassing areas such as e-commerce, online travel, and food delivery, also contributed positively, albeit at a more moderate pace. Revenue in this domain grew by 3.6% over the seven-month period.

Profitability and Investment Trends

While revenue showed healthy growth, the pace of profit increase for major internet companies slowed down. The total profits for these companies saw a 5.0% increase year-on-year during January-July 2026, a noticeable deceleration from the first half of the year. This suggests that companies may be facing increased operational costs or are reinvesting profits to drive future growth.

Conversely, investment in research and development (R&D) accelerated significantly. Internet companies ramped up their R&D spending, which grew by 14.8% in the first seven months of the year. This represents an increase of 0.7 percentage points in the growth rate compared to the first half of the year, highlighting a strategic focus on innovation and future technological advancements.

Regional Performance Disparities

The MIIT report also shed light on regional differences in internet business revenue growth:

  • Eastern region: Experienced a robust 8.1% year-on-year increase in internet business revenue. This region, which includes major economic hubs, accounted for a significant 90.9% of the national internet business revenue.
  • Central region: Faced a decline of 15.0% in internet business revenue.
  • Western region: Saw a modest increase of 5.1% in internet business revenue.
  • Northeastern region: Recorded a substantial decrease of 25.8% in internet business revenue.

Key Economic Zones Show Strong Growth

Within the eastern region, key economic powerhouses demonstrated particularly strong performance:

  • The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (Jing-Jin-Ji) region reported a 13% increase in internet business revenue, contributing 34% to the national total.
  • The Yangtze River Delta region saw a 3.2% increase, accounting for 30.5% of the national total.

Overall, 15 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities across China recorded positive growth in internet business revenue during the January-July period. The top five regions in terms of internet business revenue were Beijing, Guangdong, Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Guizhou.

The data suggests a dynamic landscape for China’s internet industry, characterized by steady overall growth, a strong emphasis on innovation through increased R&D, and notable regional economic disparities.
