China has reached a significant milestone in its offshore carbon capture and storage efforts with the completion of the main structure for its first offshore carbon dioxide injection and enhanced gas recovery (CCUS) project. The central platform for the Dongfang 1-1 gas field’s CCUS demonstration project has finished construction and is now entering the commissioning phase, according to CNOOC (China National Offshore Oil Corporation) as reported by CCTV News.

A Leap in Offshore Carbon Sequestration

This pioneering project is set to make a substantial environmental impact, with the capacity to sequester over 1 million tons of carbon dioxide annually into deep-sea geological formations once operational. This capability is crucial for advancing the large-scale, deep decarbonization of China’s offshore energy sector.

The Dongfang 1-1 CCUS central platform is an engineering marvel. Weighing nearly 17,000 tons and standing taller than a 28-story building, its deck area spans over 10,000 square meters – equivalent to nearly 22 standard basketball courts. The platform is designed to transform associated CO2 produced during natural gas extraction into a valuable resource. By capturing, purifying, and re-injecting the CO2 under pressure into the seabed strata, the project aims to both increase the recovery rate of hard-to-extract natural gas and achieve permanent CO2 sequestration.

From Theory to Practice: A Game Changer for Gas Fields

The Dongfang 1-1 gas field holds particular significance as China’s first independently operated offshore gas field and a prominent offshore high-carbon gas field. Since commencing production in 2003, it has produced over 50 billion cubic meters of gas. However, as the field enters its later stages of development, the natural gas output is declining while its carbon content is increasing. This trend has created the ideal conditions for the CCUS technology to transition from theoretical application to practical implementation.

The project at the Dongfang 1-1 gas field marks the first large-scale offshore application of CO2 injection and enhanced gas recovery technology in China. Upon full operational capacity, the project will inject over one million tons of CO2 annually into the geological formations. This initiative is poised to establish China as a leader in the offshore carbon fixation industry and promote the broader utilization of CO2 as a resource within industrial applications.

This development underscores China’s commitment to addressing climate change and exploring innovative solutions for carbon management within its vital offshore energy infrastructure. The successful deployment of this technology could pave the way for similar projects globally, contributing significantly to international efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
