China is making significant strides in its data infrastructure, with the National Data Administration announcing a substantial increase in high-quality datasets available nationwide. As of August this year, the country has established over 126,000 such datasets, boasting a total volume exceeding 1815 PB. This represents a remarkable growth of over 89% compared to the end of the first quarter.
These high-quality datasets are crucial for the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI). Defined as data collections that have undergone processing such as collection and refinement, they are directly usable for developing and training AI models, effectively enhancing model performance. The burgeoning availability of these datasets is set to provide robust support for the ongoing development of AI technologies across China.
The National Data Administration’s efforts to streamline data supply are evident in the progress of the National Dataset Management Service System. Since its launch in April, the system has already facilitated the release of over 1700 datasets, contributing to the continuous expansion of China’s data supply capacity.
Further fostering data accessibility and exchange, the 2026 China International Big Data Industry Expo, currently underway in Guiyang, Guizhou, features a novel “Dataset Market” for the first time. This dedicated space brings together 95 data enterprises showcasing 253 high-quality data products. The initiative aims to create a more precise connection between data providers and data users, stimulating more effective data utilization and innovation.
The expo, a key event in China’s big data landscape, highlights the nation’s commitment to building a strong data ecosystem. The rapid growth in high-quality datasets underscores a strategic push to leverage data as a core element for technological advancement and economic development, particularly in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.
