HDMI module to bring Nintendo Switch Lite to the big screen

If you can’t get your hands on the latest version of the Nintendo Switch 2, you can keep FOMO at bay for now with a clever mod for the Switch Lite. Retro Remake co-founder Taki Udon has posted a video showing a working version of the SUPER5 OLED Touch HDMI modification. As the long name suggests, this third-party mod adds an OLED display, glass touchscreen, and HDMI output to the Switch Lite.

The Nintendo Switch 2 has only been out for a month, so it’s too early to expect news of a successor to the Switch Lite. However, the Retro Remake mod adds some important upgrades to Nintendo’s 2019 portable console and gives us some idea of what the next-generation version might look like. Specifically, it’s a solderless mod that mostly only requires connecting cables and can output 1080p HDMI video to a larger screen than the Switch Lite’s 5.5-inch LCD touchscreen.

Previously, Retro Remake offered a SUPER5 OLED Touch module that did not have HDMI functionality. Adding the extra feature proved to be a major challenge, according to the company’s co-founder, who said the project took “18 months of R&D, as many failed revisions, and over $200k in expenses.”

“I can’t describe how hard it was to go through so many failed revisions,” Takie Udon wrote on X. “After the third failure, I was hoping that each subsequent version would be successful, but it wasn’t.

Testing of the SUPER5 OLED Touch HDMI upgrade kit is still ongoing, but the latest post shows that the Switch Lite mod plays Mario Kart on a larger display. Retro Remake’s HDMI upgrade kits start at $90, but they are currently sold out on the company’s website. According to an email sent to customers who pre-ordered, the company is not sure when it will be able to deliver the kits.
