Yamaha announces new portable controller for boat

Yamaha has announced a new handheld controller that gives the captain full control of the boat from anywhere on board. It is compatible with Yamaha’s Helm Master EX control system, which is designed to make boat control more accessible.

The Helm Master EX wireless control system, which looks like an updated version of the Nunchuk controller used with the Nintendo Wii, was announced today at the Miami International Boat Show 2025, but will not be available for dealer installation until the fall of 2025. The price of the controller was not disclosed, but for single-engine boats, the entire system is an upgrade that costs well over $12,000.

Yamaha first introduced its Helm Master EX modular control system in 2020 to make it easier to control boats with multiple engines. The system includes both physical and touch controls and can be complemented by an autopilot system for holding position or following a route, as well as a joystick with throttle and steering controls for easier maneuvering.

The remote control allows captains to operate the ship without assistance. When launching or mooring, they can maneuver the boat with one hand and use the other to secure ropes or adjust the fenders. The remote’s battery lasts for approximately eight hours of operation, but can be extended by placing it on the charging cradle from time to time, which can be placed anywhere on the boat.

The remote control is waterproof, buoyant, and equipped with a system that can detect and respond to someone going overboard. It connects with eight key fobs (two of which are included in the system) worn by the captain and passengers, and if someone falls into the water, the boat will come to a complete stop and idle or shut down the engines completely, depending on the situation.
