Grok, the artificial intelligence assistant that is somehow built into X, is now available as a standalone app. Just like the version that exists as a tab on the social media platform, Grok can be used to create images, summarize text, and answer questions in a conversational tone that xAI, the creator of the AI assistant, calls “humorous and engaging.”
The app was first tested by a limited number of users in December 2024, around the same time that X debuted a free Grok tier available to everyone. Before that, you had to pay at least $8 per month for X Premium to have the privilege of using artificial intelligence.
The limitations of this free access – 10 queries every two hours, three image analysis queries per day – may also apply to the Grok app. You can use the app without logging in or with an Apple, X, Google, or regular email account. It is unclear if the X Premium subscription provides additional benefits in the Grok app in the same way as the X subscription.
Grok has faced the same issues with accuracy and quirky image generation options as other AI assistants such as Gemini and ChatGPT. The chatbot stands out from the competition primarily because xAI positions it to answer “spicy questions” that other AI assistants avoid, and because the Grok version of the AI model is open source. You’ll see for yourself how “spicy” the Grok app is, but at least now you don’t have to switch to X to use it.
