Microsoft is rolling out a new cloud gaming preview for Xbox, allowing players to access the service without a Game Pass subscription. This new standalone payment model is currently in a preview phase, offering select Xbox Insiders an early look before its official launch in November.

Standalone Cloud Gaming Tiers

For those eager to jump into cloud gaming without committing to Game Pass, Xbox is offering introductory promotional rates. These rates are structured around playtime, providing flexibility for different user engagement levels:

  • 10 hours for $3.99 (approximately ¥26.7 Chinese Yuan)
  • 25 hours for $7.99 (approximately ¥53.4 Chinese Yuan)
  • 50 hours for $11.99 (approximately ¥80.2 Chinese Yuan)

Free Tier with Ads

In addition to the paid tiers, Xbox Insiders can also try out a free version of cloud gaming that includes advertisements. This allows a broader audience to test the service and experience its capabilities firsthand.

Context: Game Pass Cloud Gaming Limits

This development comes as Microsoft previously announced upcoming changes to the cloud gaming benefits included with Xbox Game Pass subscriptions. Starting this November, the cloud gaming hours for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will be capped at 15 hours per month. Beyond this limit, users will either see advertisements or be required to pay extra to continue playing.

The introduction of a standalone cloud gaming option suggests Microsoft’s strategy to cater to a wider range of gamers, including those who may not be interested in the full suite of Game Pass benefits but still want to utilize the cloud gaming infrastructure. This move could potentially attract new users to cloud gaming and offer a more accessible entry point into Microsoft’s gaming ecosystem.

The preview phase is crucial for gathering feedback and refining the service before its general release. It remains to be seen how these new pricing structures and the upcoming Game Pass hour limits will impact the overall cloud gaming landscape and user adoption rates.
