X’s social media platform has been down all morning, with brief but recurring outages that have prevented posts from loading on both mobile and desktop devices. According to Downdetector, the first large-scale issue began around 5:40 a.m. ET this morning, causing graphics in the mobile apps to constantly fail to update and some X users to be stuck in an endless loading loop.
We’ve reached out to X and will update this story if we hear back. There has been no response, but Elon Musk tweeted at around 1:30 p.m. ET, blaming it on a “massive cyberattack,” something we’ve heard Elon say before.
In an interview with Fox Business, Musk said that “we’re not sure what happened. But there was a massive cyberattack that was trying to take down X’s system from IP addresses originating in Ukraine.”
The web version of X consistently displays an error message saying “Something went wrong. Try reloading” when trying to open or refresh a page, and we’ve occasionally seen Cloudflare error pages saying a host error when connecting to X.com.
According to NetBlocks, X’s loading issues are affecting users worldwide, with reports of outages also coming from other social networks. Reports of outages have been sporadic, with X typically going down for a few minutes before users can refresh their feeds again.
X’s competitors, such as Bluesky, Threads, and Mastodon, remain active and accessible for now, giving X users alternative platforms to switch to while X works on its issues.
