Blizzard Entertainment is taking a significant step towards multi-device accessibility with its upcoming title, World of Warcraft: Infinite. The game, slated for release on November 4th, will introduce native controller support, a notable departure for a franchise historically reliant on keyboard and mouse controls.

A New Era for World of Warcraft Accessibility

Building upon the foundation of the original 2004 game, World of Warcraft: Infinite promises to blend familiar world-building and gameplay with a fresh narrative. However, the most striking addition announced is the seamless integration of controller input.

This move is more than just a minor tweak; it represents Blizzard’s ambition to broaden the horizons of how and where players can engage with the iconic World of Warcraft universe.

Controller Support: The First Step in a Broader Strategy

Holly Longdale, Executive Producer and Vice President for World of Warcraft, highlighted the significance of this change. She stated that the introduction of controller support is merely the initial phase in a larger strategy aimed at enabling players to enjoy World of Warcraft experiences across a wider array of devices.

Longdale elaborated on this vision, referencing internal projects and industry trends like “Project Helix.” She explained, “We’ve been hearing about Project Helix and similar initiatives, and the lines between different platforms are likely to become more blurred in the future. We simply want players to be able to play on different devices; we’ve already seen successful runs on devices like the ROG Ally X.”

The aim is to provide players with significant flexibility, not just confined to traditional console platforms. This flexibility extends to adapting the game for various hardware and player preferences.

The development team’s focus on controller adaptation is intended to offer players substantial freedom, moving beyond the confines of solely PC-based gaming. This forward-thinking approach suggests Blizzard is keenly observing the evolving landscape of gaming hardware and player expectations, positioning World of Warcraft: Infinite as a potential pioneer in making the beloved MMORPG accessible in new and innovative ways.
