Windows 11 is testing new icons on the taskbar

Microsoft is testing icons on the taskbar in Windows 11 that can change in size as you open more apps, or stay smaller forever. The new features are included in the latest Insider Preview Beta.

If you’re in the beta, under Taskbar Settings > Taskbar Behavior, you can select options under Show smaller buttons on the taskbar: Always, Never, or When the taskbar is full. The third option will reduce the size of the icons so that they all fit and are not hidden in the second menu.

The behavior is similar to macOS, where icons on the dock get smaller as more apps or minimized windows are added.

X user phantomofearth, who frequently digs into insider builds, reported that the Start menu has also been updated. It now has a larger layout that includes the ability to hide recommended recent apps and can show all of your apps on the page.

Microsoft notes that users who upgrade to this Insider Build may lose the cool new battery status icons that the company introduced in January, but it plans to bring them back to insiders soon.
