Wear OS 5 based on Android 14 in development

Last year, several new OEMs chose Wear OS for their new devices. Xiaomi, a popular Chinese electronics manufacturer, has unveiled its first smartwatch on Wear OS – Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro with Wear OS 4. Samsung released Galaxy Watch 6 with Wear OS 4 and later made it available for Pixel smartwatches. The Korean giant and Google are currently working on the next iteration, Wear OS 5, based on Android 14. According to a new report, Samsung is working diligently on Wear OS 5 to release it with the upcoming Galaxy Watch 7.

A 9to5Google report suggests a summer release of Wear OS 5 along with the new Samsung Galaxy Watch 7. The new iteration of Wear OS will follow the same update schedule as Wear OS 4. For the record, Wear OS 4 debuted with the Galaxy Watch 6 and Watch 6 Classic as One UI 5 Watch, and later became available for the Pixel Watch 2 and then the Pixel Watch. Samsung also made it available for the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic, as well as the Galaxy Watch 5 and 5 Pro.

The source reveals that there are several references to Wear OS 5 in the yet-to-be-released Android 14 build. Samsung is working on a new build to ensure that the Exynos 5535 runs at full capacity when running Wear OS 5. The move suggests that Samsung’s next-generation smartwatch, expected to be released this summer, will debut with Wear OS 5. The Pixel Watch 3 is also expected to receive the update in the fall.

However, there are no details about the features and changes in Wear OS 5 yet. The move to an annual update cycle for wearables will bring it closer to the regular smartphone update schedule, moving away from the previous model where Wear OS often skipped versions of Android.
