Volkswagen presents an electric car for 20,000 euros for those who want it

As promised, Volkswagen unveiled its upcoming entry-level electric car at an event Wednesday in Wolfsburg, Germany. The automaker describes the ID.EVERY1 concept as an “intelligent, flexible and affordable” electric car for the masses… if those masses live in Europe. The production version is expected to cost around 20,000 euros ($21,583) when it arrives in 2027.

The car joins the ID.2all and the sporty ID.GTI in using Volkswagen’s modular MEB platform, which is designed to be flexible enough to support everything from compact cars like the tiny ID.EVERY1 to more bulky SUVs. The company plans to launch four electric models (including this one) based on a front-wheel-drive version of the platform by 2027.

Volkswagen also says the ID.EVERY1 will be the first model to run on a “fundamentally new, particularly powerful software architecture,” which sounds like the fruit of a $5 billion partnership with Rivian announced last year. The automaker describes the platform (unconfirmed but likely based on Rivian) as making the concept more future-proof, allowing it to “be equipped with new features throughout its entire lifecycle.” As a budget electric car, its specs won’t make your jaw drop, but they could still be a good balance for price-conscious buyers. The concept can reach over 80 mph (130 km/h) thanks to a 70 kW (94 hp) electric motor. Volkswagen estimates a range of at least 155 miles (250 km). The compact electric car measures just 12.7 feet long, which puts it between the now-discontinued up! (11.8 feet) and ID.2all (13.3 feet). The ID.EVERY1 has room for four people and 10.8 cubic feet of cargo space.

Regarding its cute exterior, Volkswagen design chief Andreas Mindt said, “Our ambition was to create something bold yet approachable. The ID. EVERY1 has a confident look, but remains attractive thanks to details like the dynamic headlights and the ‘smiling’ rear end. These design elements make it more than just a car: they give it character and an identity that people can relate to.”

If this sounds like your dream budget car, well, you better live in Europe, or you’re out of luck. Volkswagen describes the ID.EVERY1 as “from Europe for Europe,” which certainly doesn’t sound like it when translated as “America-centric.”
