The Socialist Republic of Vietnam has officially become the 78th nation to sign the Artemis Accords, a landmark international agreement aimed at fostering the peaceful, transparent, and responsible exploration of outer space. This move signifies Vietnam’s commitment to joining a growing global coalition dedicated to advancing humanity’s presence beyond Earth, particularly in the context of lunar and Martian exploration.

A New Chapter for Space Cooperation

NASA Deputy Administrator Matt Anderson highlighted the significance of Vietnam’s accession, stating that it arrives at a crucial juncture in the development of Vietnam’s own burgeoning space program. He emphasized the existing momentum in satellite innovation, land-use research, and radar-based Earth observation between NASA and the Vietnam National Space Center. The Artemis Accords will now serve as a foundation for building upon this established relationship, aligning both nations on core principles for future space endeavors.

The official signing ceremony took place during the Vietnam International Digital Week in Ha Long, with Vietnam’s Minister of Science and Technology, Vũ Hải Quân, and the United States Ambassador to Vietnam, Jennifer Wicks, in attendance. This agreement further solidifies the U.S.-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, extending its reach into the vital domain of space exploration. This partnership, built on over three decades of cooperation across various sectors, now embraces a new frontier aimed at promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.

Commitment to Responsible Space Exploration

Vietnam’s commitment through the Artemis Accords aligns with principles that are foundational to safe and sustainable space activities. Key tenets include:

  • Exploring space peaceably and transparently.
  • Rendering aid to personnel in distress during space exploration.
  • Enabling universal access to scientific data for the benefit of all humanity.
  • Ensuring that space activities do not interfere with the activities of other nations.
  • Preserving historically significant sites and artifacts through the development of best practices for space exploration.

This expansion of the Artemis Accords underscores a global vision for space exploration that prioritizes collaboration, safety, and the long-term benefit of humankind. As more nations are expected to join in the future, the Accords are poised to play an increasingly vital role in shaping a secure and prosperous future in space.
